What I think you mean is that you're concerned that giving him food will increase his need to eliminate. That's a possibility. It's a matter of how long you're expecting him to stay in his crate. Cathy was looking for a way of keeping him quiet just during mealtimes. No, it shouldn't make him more likely to mess in his crate during that short period of time.

I know many people who give their dogs kongs while crating them for long periods of time and it's not an issue. You could try it and see.
we would like to try it- we're just trying to find a food that Cody would be willing to fight for! we've been testing him by giving him little licks of peanut butter and such but he just turns his nose up. Later we realized he wasn't feeling well though so now that he's actually eating again we'll have to try some more foods- it'd be a shame to pack a kong and for him to just ignore it! (though I'm sure the ants would love it)

We're just looking for a way to occupy him during meals too, but sometimes that means eating out which can extend to two hours ... or church which has us away for 3 hours
