I had the same terrifying problem with Pippa running out the door when she was little and we did the same thing by putting up a baby gate. Sometimes someone would forget and she would bolt. I know lots of people have said obedience training, but that really is what made that behavior lessen. If you can't go to a class, get a book to learn how to teach basic obedience skills. Because even though Pippa isn't always very obedient...she knows the commands "stay" and "come", and if she gets out the door, I say, "Stay" and she hunkers down where she's at until I come and get her. She's not that good at "come" but we are still working on it. She's a little stubborn (I know none of you know what I mean by that!!! hehe)
