I also have this problem with Lillie. She has a long soft coat. I had bought some cowboy magic (everyone on here raves about it). I wasn't that impressed with it. However, I realized, after using it a few times and becoming extremely frustrated, that I was using the wrong brush..(dumb me!) I rub CM into my hands then rub it into her coat...where she is really matted I put a tiny drop of CM right on the matt and rub between my fingers. I then use a (I guess it's called) a slicker brush. It is a pin brush without the little rubber ends...I take small sections of hair and start to brush from the end in, so there isn't so much pulling. Lillie isn't crazy about being brushed so I usually do this at night when she is tired and laying on my lap. Lillie used to get really matted when she was a puppy...she doesn't seem to get as matted now that she is a yr old..
