Unique names are one thing because you might have a shot at spelling it. One that always drove me crazy was "Amberly" It's like two parents couldn't agree on Kimberly or Amber so they made up a name. But at least I can spell it.
Crazy re-spellings are another story all together. I've seen Apryl, Alyx, Alysyn, Melyssa, etc. What is the obsession with Y's? Also, what everyone thought would be unique is not. Trust me. There are always 15 Mackensie/McKinsey/McKensey's, 10 Taylors, 18 Catelyn/Caitlyn/Katelyn/Kaitlynn/Katielynn/etc!, etc. There are so many more "unique" names we have a multiples of. So these "unique" names are no less common than the Mikes and Beckys and Jessicas.
Also, parents name their kid, say, "Michael John" and then call him "Nick" If you name your kid Michael and call him Mike or Mickey that's fine. Don't name him Michael and call him Nick. NAME HIM NICK. Or Michael Nicholas. Or somehow name him so that regular people can figure out who on earth he is.
The most frustrating thing is when they tell me their name and I write "Katie" and then they get mad that I didn't write "Kaity" or "Catee" !! They will need to get used to having their name spelled wrong. Generally it will be right on official documents because those are all computer generated, but when someone just write their name down they WILL need to spell it for them.
Anyway, I'm not putting anyone down or any of these names down, I just want you all to try to see the other side. If you still like the name "Rybekkah" then go nuts. |
HOW RIGHT YOU ARE!!!!! My poor Kate deals with this EVERY DAY!!!! She has finally decided to go by KATE... she is a "Katelyn" Boy was I NOT thinking ahead when I named her!!! Not only did I curse her with a weird spelling, but I tried to please both grandmothers by meshing their names Carolyn and Karol to get Karolyn.... So she is Katelyn Karolyn... Heaven forbid she fall in love with a man who's last name starts with a "K"! Can you even... I don't want to think about it!
And worse... Please teach your kids the correct way to pronounce their names!!! My first husband has a German sir name Schoen.... he says it "SHANE" And that is not how it is pronounced! My poor child is forever correcting people when they "butcher" her last name, and looking quite ignorant in the process I might add! So we finally have her pronouncing it the correct way with the German pronunciation, which sounds entirely different.. much to the dismay of her father. Thank you Wayne Newton for that one!
And if cursing my daughter was not bad enough I named my son Garrett Alan... Giving him the initials that he will forever carry...... G.A.S. Which are actually quite fitting for my son, but still not deserved by any child, anywhere! I am truly sorry! I had no idea... I honestly was not even thinking! Obviously.....
