There is no need to give him flea preventative if he doesn't have fleas or isn't getting fleas. But you really need to check him good. Flip him over on his back and graze through all the hair on his tummy, on his bum, under his armpits, under his neck, and on his head. That's usually wear nasty fleas like to hide out.
