My high school students were all very interested in my adoption of Gizmo, and I had to find a nice way to avoid an answer. I first explained that some people would be offended by that question, but that the price for Yorkies can range from several hundred to a few thousand. What's most important is that the puppy is from a reputable breeder and not a puppy mill, so if I have to pay more to guarantee that I would. Usually, this brings up a whole discussion of puppy mills and animal rescue and they forget the original question. If a student really seems interested and asks me privately later, I explain that he/she really needs to start saving money like I did. But I have never answered the question directly.
