there is nothing wrong with free feeding, especailly if you are dealing with a picky eater!! before i started home cooking for Layla she was free fed and would pick at it as she pleased. I think free feeding becomes a problem with your pup just eats it all at once because it is there... sounds like Tobie will do fine the way you are doing it!
