My first suggestion is the KONG, but like the other things you tried, it won't really last all day.
I saw some recording machine a while back online that lets you save a message for your pup. You can play is back while away at 1-4 hour intervals so the pup can hear your voice and not feel so lonely. There are also special DVDs for dogs (and cats) that keep some pets entertained. I have clients that leave the TV or radio on for their pets, too.
If you can afford it, you can have a dog-walker or pet sitter come by during that day to take him on a walk or just play with him at home. (This is my job & I love it!) If you go that route, make sure the company is bonded & insured to protect you, and request references on the particular person you'll be getting.
