That does make sense Ellie May. My friend taught her dog the command settle. For stay the dog only had to stay until released which was going to be a relatively short time for settle she better go ahead and get comfy b/c she was going to be there a while. Something like this might work for you. I don't know how she taught her though, I imagine it was something silimar to stay but no clue. If you like the sounds of it I could ask her how they did it.

Another one of my friend's family had taught their dog out of the kitchen. I think it was just something the dog picked up, I don't think they actually sat down and tried to teach him. But it worked great when they were cooking or eating or cleaning and it is definately something you could teach a dog.

I was actually thinking to myself as I was writing this that well maybe these things would help for the mop/broom but vacuuming is going to be a bit harder. Then I went and reread your post, "nothing helps with the vacuum", I had to laugh a little.
