Default How do dogs do it?

One thing that amazes me about dogs is how they can sense things so easily. Jake can tell if I'm upset about something. He will snuggle with me and give me kisses, like he's comforting me.

When I had abdominal surgery, I was a little worried about him jumping up on my lap and bumping my tummy. But, when I came home from the hospital, it was like he knew. He didn't jump on my lap at all. He would jump up onto the couch next to me, then very gingerly get on my lap and lay down, like he was being oh so careful not to bump me. At night, I'd get into bed, and he would be very careful about how he layed down next to me. My hubby had to be in the hospital for a couple days, and he was the same way with him. He didn't have surgery, but Jake would periodically go check on him when he was napping.

How do dogs know these things? I find it so interesting!
