Just a thought..... but what about putting several sheets of foam rubber side by side to make a large area for him? I've bought the foam rubber at Wal Mart before when I was making chair cushions.
I think that would give him "grip", plus cushion him if he does fall and it comes in different thicknesses so if you got some that was "just right", it wouldn't hurt him if he walked off it.
