Actually I cheated. I have a book called "Dog Owner's Home Veterinary Handbook" I believe it's a must have book. It's full of information on various illnesses, diseases, first aid and much much more. Everytime one of my girls has a weird symptom I grab the book. It's full of book marks and has help me figure out what can wait and what needs immediate attention.

That sounds like a great book to have on hand. I should definately get a copy, especially since I tend to freak out and rush my two to the vet every time anything is out of the ordinary.
