Riley was a terror when we first got her when it came to riding in the car. She would flip out, scream and bite the crate, etc. It was awful.
Finally, I learned that covering her with a blanket signaled it was quiet time (a technique we have to use at home as well). I also would just turn on the radio and sing, ignoring her. Now she'll whine for just a few seconds then lie down and watch me drive.
I also purchased a carrier that "contains" her a bit closer so she doesn't have a lot of free space.
