I have had the exact same experience during my years of being a volunteer at our local animal shelter.
The small breed dogs have a waiting list of pre approved homes. They are essentially guaranteed a home before we even get them! It does not matter if they are a pure breed or a designer fashion mixed breed dog!
They remain in the shelter for the required 10 days, for the former owner to claim them and then any additional days if spaying or neutering is necessary, and then they are gone. The small breed dogs never even make it to be advertised for adoption because we have so many waiting & approved homes for them. This is regardless if they are the new flavor of the month designer breed dog or a pure bred dog. If it is a small breed dog--they are gone. ALWAYS!!!
