I just talked to the vet, and he agreed that it sounds like Jack could benefit from the surgery. He said if he was 14, 15, he might advise against it, but he just turned 11 and he's otherwise as healthy as a horse.

He said he wants to do some bloodwork and examine him and discuss it with me because the surgery is "not a no-brainer." I imagine he'll warn me about the risks Ozzie'sperson mentioned. Thanks, btw.

He has an appointment for Wednesday to be examined. In the meantime, I'll hit the Web and see what I can find.

Thanks again for your thoughts, you guys. I've felt guilty about not doing this surgery earlier, and it's always been a concern. If I get reasonable assurance that it will be successful, I think it's worth the risk.
