Hm, I know how you feel. We have a great groomer that I trust but I do most of Jaden and Jewelina's trimming myself as well. It's scary the first time but it gets a lot easier. Just start with a little and remember you can always take off more and now the other way around
Baby hair does make a lot of difference, as soon as Jewelina grew out of her puppy coat the difference was striking. It went from fuzzy poofy hair to sleek silk that lays perfectly flat.
