Default Otis is a runner!

If my Otis gets into open air --- he's GONE! I know he loves me to pieces, but when he gets a chance to explore or hunt...forget mom. I've heard it's the terrier nature. Some will stay by your side and never stray from puppy to senior. Some "live to run and hunt". I've had a total of 4 terrifying experiences where someone has held the door open a second too long, or he found a hole in the fence. Luckily, I have always caught him right away. Opening a car door and saying bye-bye has worked in the past. I am a wiz with chicken wire. He goes no-where without a leash or me checking out the fence. Whenever someone knocks on the door, I immediately pick him up so there's no chance he'll get through. It inhibits me from taking him as many places as I'd like to because I"m afraid he will get away. Can someone tell me, will it get better as he gets older? He will be 3 on April 19th. Some pics.
1. I would never run away Mom!
2. Did I just hear the door open?
3. My Shih-poo Oliver, he would never leave me (or his toy bone)
4. Come on, let's go outside!!
