I have experienced the same thing this week. The problem is that our dogs are used to certain foods and their stomachs are acclimated to those foods. I think alot of us care so much for our dogs that when this recall thing happened, our first thought was "Nothing but the best for my boy...I'm not taking any chances..." and we took them off the commercial food. The result was that many of these dogs have since suffered diarrhea and vomiting and, as a result, they're in very much the same boat as those dogs that ate the recalled foods...dehydrated and at risk for kidney failure. Ironic, wouldn't you say? (My Tahoe also suffers from ongoing liver problems and pancreatitis.)
Anyway, give him lots of fluids. If you want to switch him to a bland diet of chicken and rice, I would gradually add it to his existing feeding of dry food.
Regarding the point that was made about Eukanuba not being on the "recall list", I want to point out that I, for one, don't trust anything these companies say right now. How many companies do you think have NOT come forward because of the long term impact it will have on their market share? Eukanuba, Iams, Science Diet, etc. These are all premium, more expensive, products and the last thing they want to admit is that they are using the same contents in their foods as the cheap brands. It destroys their credibility in the industry and with the consumers. How many people have rushed to holistic/organic foods in the last week despite the fact that their dog's food ISN"T on the recall list? Can you imagine how many would if they WERE on the recall list? Yikes.
The sad thing is that our beloved pets are just cash counts for much of this industry. How many uncaring vets (uncaring about your pet, but not about how much they charge for your pet's care) have you encountered...that are in it for the cold hard cash? How many manufacturers care little about what's IN the pets food as long as it sells? Why is Petsmart so willing to display dangerous "Greenies" as their impulse items at the register when Greenies are KNOWN to be dangerous choking hazards? Because it makes them money, that's why.
So, pardon me for not trusting the manufacturers in this industry. My Tahoe, Oreo, Coco and Johnny Cash are my livelihood and probably the only children I'll ever have. They mean more to me than anything and I will do anything for them. I'm sure many here share those sentiments.
I'm getting off my soapbox and this rant isn't directed towards anyone but the industry itself.
