the first few times I used it I didn't put the cap on and my house smelled good for days....I still had oil - but you're right - you have to 'cap' them ....it sounds like something went wrong with your friends - I've never smelt burning from the one I have I put mine in the living room away from my husband and it spreads thru the whole house...I like it but I'm like you - I need something easier AND don't want to mess with anything you need to 'burn'

edited...you sold ME on the Diffusers !! I can't wait to get one
