I think it also depends on the dog. My Desi was not happy being home alone all day and when we got home she demanded a lot of attention. Getting Millie made a big difference in her life, now we are not the center of her universe. But, on the other hand, I once had a dog (Chihuahua) who was very laid back and was happy being by himself, when we got another dog was when our problems started. He just liked being the only dog in the house. So, getting a second dog depends on you and your dog.
