Because of the snow in NYC, I looked for boots for Max. They were ridiculously expensive especially since I knew he would manage to get them off as soon as possible. The pet store sold me Pawz. They're rubber and are just like a balloon with the tie cut off, only stronger. They're disposable - he can wear them several times until they rip. There are 12 in a pack and it cost $10.99. Of course, the small is too big, but that velcro strip idea would keep them on. I like them because the snow melting chemicals can't penetrate the rubber. He didn't mind them at all.

My Mom lost a poodle years ago to rock salt, so I definitely don't think it's cruel for use as protection. For fashion, if the dog doesn't mind, do what you want in my opinion.
