My .02:

The type and purpose of the shoe makes a difference in my opinion. If you just want to put cute shoes on your pup for a picture or two or a trip outside to potty, I think anything is fine, the cuter the better.

But for prolonged or athletic use, I use the least-intrusive shoe (we call 'em "booties" up here ) I can find. Nothing with support of any kind. Just a sack of fleece or nylon or leather, etc., to keep the pad warm and protect it from the nasty stuff on the ground.

I own some heavily supported leather and rubber shoes on my guys, and they walk differently in them than they do fleece booties. You can tell they are not comfortable on long walks. I'm a little afraid that the extra support around the ankle could create a pivot point that could lead to a dog twisting its ankle when running. I speak on no authority here because I've never seen that happen.
