Each yorky's coat growth rate is different. I start training them to accept a topknot about 3 1/2 months of age....not much hair to do it with but, I just want them to get use to the grooming process and the feel of it. Just gather a wee amount of hair, just above the eyes and put it in a band.....isn't going to be much and don't expect it to be perfect....oh! and be prepared to have to redo it often as they will take it off.....
