orensky makes a good point about the parents of the dog. Some breeders only have the mom on site (and use a stud) but you do want to at least see the mom and the condition she's in. Also, going to dog shows and watching the breeders show (go to a few if you can), so you know who's been in it for a while and has quality (healthy and up to breed standard) dogs really helps too.
