Oh goodness Kathy.....What a headache about the airline mix up! THat deposit sounds like a keeper to me. Not sure why anyone would feel you driving to the airport, staying there for who know how long, going thru the appts, and etc would not entitle you to it. Then if you told her cash, why would she attempt to pay with a check? If I was the purchaser I would be afraid I would go all that way to come home empty handed, because some breeders would say Im sorry but that was not the agreement. No one wants to deal with a possible bad check, how fun to try to get it cleared, and the person lives hundreds of miles away. No thanks!
I had a situation once where the people drove 5 hours for a puppy. When they got here, they said they forgot their money. They said Hows about we take the dog home and send it to you. I said Hows about we dont.
They were really nice people, and the daughter was so upset and crying, I probably would have chanced a check at that time, but they didnt even have a check either. They had a friend with them, and she kindly took a cash advance on her credit card to pay for the dog, so they didnt have to drive back without the puppy. The truth is they probably would have been good for the money, but a little voice kept saying "DOnt do it dont do it" COn artists are nice too, that is how they get ya conned! The people called me later and said they understood and never got mad. They said it was their mistake not mine. Just like the airline mistake is not yours.
Or how about this one. A deposit is sent, I hold the dog for an extended period of time because they are moving........it was a heck of a long move. Then the day they were suppose to pick up the baby, I wait for hours, at one point they say they are on their way, I call back two hours later, they are still home! They never show up and say I will call later. Well that was it for me, I decided the puppy was not going with them. I find a great home I feel comfy with. I wait for the other people to call, to reschedule, and I would explain the situation to them and I would send back their deposit. I never hear from them until 2 months later! And yes they want their deposit back or a puppy. I ask why didnt you ever call back and left me hanging? They say we ran into some problems, and became homeless twice, my boss ripped me off, etc. Heavens! And I considered these people for one of my puppies. They sounded nice and stable in the beginning, but people sure do fool ya sometimes.
I do hope it all works out, try not to worry about it, gotta stay healthy to watch your son strut his stuff!
