What would happen in the event that someone wanted pick of the litter and there was only one pup??

Most reputable breeders wouldn't take a single pup. As a matter of fact one pup doesn't constitue a litter and most likely a repeat breeding would be offered.

Yes, a written contract would be the best, but remember a contract is only as good as the 2 people signing. The best thing is to know and trust the person you are dealing with.

I used a stud from my breeder/mentor, I had 1 female in the litter. By rights it was hers. When it came time to pick, she said there was no way she was taking my only female and said she'd wait until my next litter, which she did. I didn't use her stud, but she got pick of the litter.
