I try to get to the stains right away. Simple Solution works well. But there is always going to be something of it there in the carpet. So, every 2-3 weeks, I clean my carpets with my Bissell Pro-Heat deep cleaning carpet cleaner. It is the best machine I have ever tried. Much better than those rentals! I use the Bissell Pet Odor shampoo with it. This thing will even get out those stains you missed that have set it. Just pretreat the stain, wait 5 minutes and then use the cleaner as usual. I just did my whole house last week and it still looks and smells wonderful right now.

Eventually I will replace the carpet with hardwood, but it is still too new. After a carpet cleaning, it looks brand new -- so we will deal with this for a few years yet. I have to admit, Yorkies seem to be the most difficult to house train. I had thought our dachshund had been a tough case, but the Yorkies are taking longer than she did.

I also just bought a Dyson Animal DC17 vacuum -- I absolutely love this. It is picking up so much stuff from the carpet, it has to be helping keep down odors as well. I think all that hair and gunk that sifts down in the carpet holds smells too. So, a really good vacuum helps.
