I agree with the hardwoods. We have hardwoods and tile only in our house. I rolled up all the orientals (because some are antique) for 6 months until I felt that the puppy was reliable. I still have no rugs in the kitchen, where he is confined, if I cannot watch him. He is almost 1 yr and reliable but I probably won't trust him alone for a long time to come.
