I'm not really sure what kind of cleaner will actually do the job the best. I agree that using a blacklight will help you find some spots you might have missed. I personally think that dogs and carpet just don't mix.
We just layed hard wood in our house. After training 2 yorkies I couldn't stand the smell. It's so nice to walk into a fresh smelling home now. We saved alot of money by laying our wood floors ourselves, but if you are planning to do this...just know it's VERY labor intensive. My body still hurts. Well worth it though.
