I would definitely do it sooner than later... My friends kept putting it off last year for a trip to Mexico. They wanted to have a passport and not carry around their birth certificate (before the rules changed.) I think that they both ended up paying around $200. They paid for the rush fee, but still only got their passports 2-3 days before we left on our trip. I'm sure a lot of people are going through that right now, because of the new change in rules. (You can't go to Mexico/Canada without a passport)
