I vote for separating them until you have more time to supervise them together. You need to be 100,000% sure that they are okay together before you leave them alone together, IMHO.
If you separate them, their food won't be an issue, I'm guessing.
I would think that the puppy would be more likely to suffer from low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) than Coco. If you're going to pick one of them to free-feed, it should be the puppy - again, IMHO.
