Hi UrkieMom...

The Biewer is a separate breed originating from two Yorkies that had a recessive piebald gene (white gene) that when they were paired together the gene went from recessive to dominant and voila......white markings. They were then inbred and line bred to develop the standard in the 1980's in Germany. Biewer was the last name of the couple who owned the dogs and developed the breed. It now has it's own standard and is recognized and registered in Germany as a separate breed from Yorkies. Work is being done here in the U.S. for recognition, but it will take a while. AKC's website has information on what it takes for them to recognize a new breed, so it is a long process. Hope that answers your questions....you can always pm me if you want.
