If you are on a cruise, you are probably going to St. Thomas, only a couple of small ships come to St. John. You could still come to St. John for the day though, the cruise ships usually offer a day trip to come here and tour the island and see the beaches.
Yorkiedaze, the Virgin Islands are a great place to vacation. I've been here three years and I am still astounded by the beauty of the islands. Because it is a US territory, travel is fairly easy and does not require a passport (Wow, I sound like I work for the tourism board!). St. Thomas accommodations are cheaper than St. John. St. John is very laid back and is 2/3 national park, so much of the island is untouched and beautiful. If you rent a boat, you can go over to British islands for the day, like Tortola, Virgin Gorda or Yost Van Dyke. Lots of small little beach bars that are alot of fun.
