A friend of mine trained her Maltese mix to use a litter box and it worked beautifully except for the litter that would be a bit messy on the floor, but she kept the broom and dust pan handy. I'd say what ever works for you. I use wee-wee pads if it's pouring rain and when staying in motels. Taking a pan with litter with us doesn't sound too good to me.
I'd rather shake the poo in the pot and throw the pad away.
