You cannot use an open carrier. it must be airline approved and usually you are limited to 9 inches high, 14 inches wide and 18 inches length. Most are in that range but some are a little higher. the one I used was 11 inches high but I sqaushed it down. I have since bought a couple of smaller ones off e-bay that are with in the height regulations. Any more questions. sorry, I am not yorkierose but thought since I had flown just three weeks ago to escort, I might be able to help you. You must have a soft sided carrier, too. Also, make sure the four top corners are soft so it can be mashed down if necessary. I had bought a cute one just the right size but had to take it back because the corners were firm. I ended up using a cheap one from Walmart.
