I have a yorkie poo also, and he's a great dog. Mine has a poodle coat, w/a yorkie frame/face.
ALL dogs shed some which is where mats come from, ect.. but they shed very mimimally.
It isn't true that mixing two different breeds together will generate a healthier dog. It's just a hybrid myth.
If you're going for a mix, *from experience* check the shelters first, and if you're unable to find a suitable dog then look for a breeder who at least does health testing on their breeding dogs
