I use a plain old wash cloth that is saturated with very warm water. It breaks up the gunk and you are good to go. Another good way to avoid it is to have the hair trimmed by the eyes. Lex tends to not like me near his eyes after a bath. So I usually let the groomer trim around his eyes. But by accident the other day while I was bathing him (he turns into a bit limp mush and enjoys his spa time) I gathered the hair around his eyes because I was going to clean it and I was able to use my mini trimmer fast to clear away the hair there. It's great because I dont' have to run to the groomer the minute it starts to get long.
