They both have health issues, but the most important thing is buying from a REPUTABLE breeder. Generally speaking, maltese are said to be more laid back than yorkies, I also believe it depends on the individual dog as far as laid back or hyper. Pick the breed that you think would best suit you, and tell the breeder what kind of personality you are looking for, and they should be able to match you to the puppy that best fits you and your family. I have both a yorkie and a maltese and love both breeds
