They can be very similar in temperment, check out the breeder before you buy as you would with a yorkie.
FOr health problems, they have a real problem with liver shunt in the breed moreso than the Yorkies although if people keep breeding Yorkies without knowledge of liver shunt in previous generations, the Yorkie is not going to be far behind Maltese with Liver shunt issues.
Maltese as with any toy breed can also have the same knee problems etc.
