I have 3 yorkies. The male is a barker. Drives me nutz. One female is 6 months old. She barks some, but is adorable. The 2 year old is very mellow. 3-1/2 lbs. My son's girlfriend has a maltese. Adorable, but so hyper. He doesn't stay still for a minute. I think it depends on the dog. I love them all. Good luck in your decision.
