I didn't know this, but I just found out (in Snohomish County, WA) that if your dog is microchipped, you can get a 50% discount on the pet license fee. For an altered, microchipped dog, it would cost $8, for an unaltered, microchipped dog, it would cost $18. Just something to look into in your area - Seattle is now enforcing the pet licenses.
