We bought our maltese at 2 yrs old and changed her name. This is how we got her to respond to her new name. I was at the front door and hubby was about 40 feet away from me in the other room but the way our house is set up we could see each other. Anyway, we would each have several small pieces of a treat she loved and would take turns calling her "kallie, come!"........when she would get to the hubby and get her reward with lots of physical & verbal rewards and a small tidbit, I would repeat the same command and when she would come to me, I did the same thing the hubby did. We did this several times in a row and every day until she responded when we used her new name! Worked Great!
Also did this same training for the Yorkie we bought when he was six months old and changed his name as well.
