I keep the nails trimmed on my little ones. It really is painful for the mother. Start out only seperating them for a couple hours at a time and increasing over a period of time. Your puppy wont be as hungry since you will be helping and the mother won't feel such a demand which tends to irritate them after a while. You don't have to start weaning right now if the mother isn't insisting on it. Good luck!
