I can only tell you my experiences with Carter. Carter was scratching his ears so I took him to the vet. She used Epi Otic in his ear -- squirted it in the canal and used a q-tip to clean it out. He didn't have the brown yuck that you describe though. He did have a mild irritation though from me not using ear cleaner in his ears after each bath and was given drops for a few days.

Brown yuck, in some cases, indicates ear mites.
