Rockie HATED the crate as well, and frankly we never got him back to it. He would pee and poop all over and then roll in it (when we kept downsizing his crate). I finally gave up and gated him in the kitchen. That worked for us and when Rockie become potty trained, we gave him the free reign of the house. He only goes into his crate when he wants to (we leave the door open) or if he's being punished. He does crawl in sometimes--for some reason he likes to be in places that only have one entrance in which he can see (to make sure no one sneaks up on him??? don't really know). Good luck!
