The main reason I began using a digital SLR camera was because of the lack of shutter lag -- that point between when you press the button to take the picture and when the camera actually snaps.
If you think your son will play sports throughout his school years, I would invest into a Canon Digital Rebel with a decent zoom lens or a Canon 20D. Bite the bullet and you won't regret it! I advised my sister to do the same and now she has all the parents purchasing action shots of their kids from her!
