My Bichon (PTS @ 17yrs because of seizures and failing) had IBS for many years. It was confirmed by biopsy. After initial tx with meds. (abx, flagyl and prednisone) and switching his food to a foreign (something he had never had before) protein source-Wellness, whitefish and sweetpotatoe he did really well with just an occassional bout of stomach pain and diarrhea. Later in life he developed bladder stones and had to have surgery due to his diet. But he lived a good life once things got under control.
