Yuck, those e-collars seem so cumbersome. My toy poodle years ago had to wear one because of an eye injury and I just felt so sorry for him. Personally, Tatum (my Yorkie) did not need the collar because she had wire stitches which discouraged the licking issue (I thought they worked great) but I've read many times on this board where others just put a little baby onesie on the dog so they couldn't get to the stitches. You might try that if you don't want to use the e-collar.
