When Eddie was a pup, he had round-the-clock care because the MIL was home when we weren't. Now, MIL's gone, but they're old enough to get the run of the house. I set 5 hours as a limit for alone time. Fortunately, I work a mile from home and can take them for a walk at lunchtime.

I didn't crate train, but I've heard nothing but good things about it. Hopefully, YTers will let you know how long is OK to leave them in the crate.

You might consider doggy daycare, especially while he or she is a puppy.
