The very 1st thing you do when picking a stud is finding one that compliments your female. In other words when you look at your girl. Is her topline level, is her tail set correct, her front, her rear, her ear set, color. In otherwords, what would you like to correct in her. Then start looking for the stud that may correct those things, checking pedigrees, genetics, etc.
